more car woes. [Apr. 6th, 2007|02:50 am]
We took the car in, again. This is the seventh, count them, seventh time. We went out to Tim Horton's, got breakfast, then lunch (the car was in the shop from nine-fifteen in the morning until one in the afternoon); I read my AACR2R and my systems analysis text while waiting. (The systems analysis text was boring! Yes, it's better to catch requirements problems earlier on so that massive chunks of a system don't need to be replaced. Fucking duh.) Also, Carin drew. We managed to stave off clock-staring crankiness, but that was cold comfort. They replaced an exhaust gasket to fix the rattling. They might have scratched the side of the car, too... but I don't care.

It grunted a bit on the way out, and Carin had fucking had it with incompetent-at-best, malicious-at-worst mechanics. I, too, have had it with them. I'm not going back there; I consider the car Fixed Enough. Sure, they (mostly) unfucked their shoddy work without charging me extra, but it wasn't free unless you consider my time and Carin's time to be worthless. They cost me plenty, and they won't have the opportunity to do so again.

Because I needed a new tire as well (the driver's side front was as worn as the one that blew out recently), I stopped at the local Wal-Mart Tire & Lube, where we were waited on by a girl wearing an iridescent tie as a headband, I kid thee not. I got a new tire balanced and installed in under a half-hour (they'd estimated forty-five minutes), and I got a recommendation for a new mechanic to see. They were friendly and helpful, which I appreciated now more than ever.

Of course, I was also told that I have a torn CV boot on the right front tire, and that the wheel could pop off the car at any moment. That'll take the wind out of anyone's sails. So, the car is unsafe to drive. Peachy.

Despite the unsafe nature of the car, I got dropped off at Jeff's place in the afternoon, where I saw Volker for the first time in a long while, and got trained on random bits of the system. It was all very scattershot; I do hope that my understanding of it will fade in over time.

When I stopped by my father's house, he recommended that I get a car rental for the weekend; I discovered that I could get one for about fifty bucks, which I reserved. This, then, will be much, much better than trying to wrangle some other form of transportation while I wait for my car to get fixed.
