Carin and I went to see Bridge to Terabithia today. I hadn't read the book, and had heard good things about the movie. Because we were short on time and she wasn't sure she wanted to see it, I promised to watch at least half of her five-hour Pride and Prejudice. The things I do...
I like movies with misleading trailers. I was disappointed that the Serenity trailer gave away the movie, then delighted to discover that it didn't. The same goes for The Prestige, and now for Bridge to Terabithia. It looks like a low-rent Narnia ripoff, judging by the trailer, but it's really not; it's the opposite of escapist fiction. I think that the goal of the producers was to lure children to the theater and make them cry, cry, cry. I want to give them a cookie for that; it takes some guts. And, I suppose, marketing savvy.
While Carin was at work, I went to see my parents, since I hadn't gotten to last night. It was all pretty low-key; my father picked me up and tried out my fried rice, then drove me to his place, where I watched some "NYPD Blue" (they're big fans, it seems), and ate dinner with them. I helped my father put up the over-stove microwave, and sealed the vent duct that attached to its top. I also had the pleasure of having a long, interesting conversation with my sister, who's been cooped up on weekends with nowhere to go of late. About film, about the dead and evil lesbian cliche, about all sorts of things.
A possible addendum to the Mucha thing. According to these guidelines, written by actual law-type people, published anywhere pre-1909 implies public domain in the US. I'm still waiting to hear back from my legal staff.
