My laptop has died. The power went out during the night, and I couldn't get anything off of it, because I hadn't hibernated it. My review of literature was trapped on it, at the most inopportune moment imaginable. I tried to bring it to Best Buy, but as they don't sell those laptops, they won't fix them either. The fellow behind the counter pulled the drive and tried to use their recovery software... but it won't read ext3 filesystems. Again, using Linux is like owning a jeep: you still get stuck, just further from help.
My workday was spent first showing Steve that the features he requested were already in the system, and in some cases had been for months, and setting up Ubuntu on one of the spare workstations there. As the networking was pretty slow, I didn't really get anything done with it.
When I got back to the apartment, I ended up swapping my laptop hard drive into the laptop Carin had recently received--a sort of whole-body transplant, to use a metaphor. Everything worked, to my surprise, though the wireless and wired ethernet devices because eth2 and eth3, rather than eth0 and eth1, as they had been. Still, it was pretty impressive for everything to Just Work.
Unfortunately, I still haven't managed to finish my paper. I will tomorrow, honest, really this time. I'm most of the way down page eight; it's to be ten pages when completed. I'm pretty damned tuckered out at this point. Caitlin and her crew are showing up tomorrow evening. The plan, I suppose, will be to get the paper finished, reviewed and sent in during the day, then come home, nap, clean and be all peppy for our guests.
