March 14th, 2003

preparations for departure. [Mar. 14th, 2003|09:19 am]
I both gave and took an exam yesterday. The morning was full of... errands, yes. Taking the Numerical Methods exam wasn't a problem, but giving the Algorithms and Complexity one was interesting.

I made extra time for my kids; I was nice to them and answered their questions. They wanted me to fix up their homework grades... but I blew them off. If they can't be troubled to come to my office hours, when I have actual time to deal with them, then they're not getting anything from me. Nyah.

I skipped jujutsu---Alexis said there were six people there in total---to go see my sister for the first time in about two months. She's... unstable. Mercurial. Happy to see me, then upset and very much needing to go to the IMer downstairs to talk to her asshole boyfriend. Petulant, she insisted on driving up to see him in North Bumfuck (or wherever it is he goes to school) in the shitty weather. I'd offered her movie night, but apparently her boyfriend would no longer be properly turgid if she drove out in the morning. Or whatever.

Movie night was sort of cancelled, anyway. It seems that Kevin had moved the projector and cart without first telling anyone. Yes, movie night is traditionally on Friday, but since no one will be here then, it was moved up. Rick and I got there, noticed that the equipment was gone... and watched "Battle Royale" in my room.

American cinema may like its teenagers dead, but we've got nothing on the Japanese. It's like... Sam Peckinpah meets "Saved By The Bell", with ugly beige school uniforms. Rick was upset that the gay hacker kid (he was gay?) got killed, but at least it wasn't in a stupid way. Oh, the kids drop like rabbits in a flagrant "Lord of the Flies" ripoff with some arbitrary rules tossed in to make the game more... interesting, I guess. The dialogue is either poorly translated or just plain bad, but... well, teenagers talk like that.

Maybe I'll make Lee watch it. I wonder if she'll think of better strategies than the players use in the movie. No doubt.

The caffeine study concluded this morning; my obligation here is finished. They actually paid me in a fat wad of bills... since I was anticipating it so much, it didn't have an emotional impact. Maybe it's too big to feel real.

I'm burning DS9 before I go, trying to figure out what I'll forget to bring. I have a new box of a hundred sharps. I swiped five smaller-gauge ones from the lab before I left. (Okay, reflecting on it, that's sketchy behavior, especially remembering how squicked my mother was at the tracks on my arms from all the blood draws I had. Then again, it's probably three and a half cents worth of needles. I can live with that.)

Presents for Lee, clothing for me, wallies, sharps, exams to grade, book ("Wasted") to write about for Women and Violence, camera/tripod/tapes. I think I have a list of the important stuff somewhere around.

I'll probably show up in Oberlin between eight-thirty and nine-thirty, depending on the breaks. The sky looks friendly, and I'm feeling optimistic.
