February 17th, 2003

the downfall of jekyll. [Feb. 17th, 2003|08:58 pm]
More of the fucking white shit fell today. I was done with winter the last time it hit, and now it's doing it again. One last hurrah for winter, I suppose. If this were a trip weekend, it would have kept me in Oberlin.

Nothing romancey-pants happened, despite all the snow. My lab obligation was still there, so two-thirds of the group showed up at the lab and constructed an integrating amplifier. It was actually pretty nifty to see, though I couldn't quite figure out what the output from a triangle wave was. Pairs of parabolas? Food for thought, I guess. We were out in less than forty-five minutes. Had lunch with lab guy, which was a nice change from Wednesday's antagonism. Five hours of frustration will put anyone's nerves on edge.

The snow was... deep. I was leaping through it, sinking almost knee-deep on the way back. Whoosh. Whoosh. Whoosh. Pause. Pant. Pant. Whoosh. Whoosh. Repeat as necessary. Everything else was closed, so no office hours, just the quiet whoosh of leaping through the giant snowbank that covered campus. It would have been a lot more magical without the snow slowly melting in my shoes, that's for sure.

Then my network troubles started. I replaced the NIC and went down to dinner. When I came back, the network was inaccessible. Since then, I've tried various combinations of NIC, PCI slot, hub port and cable, along with both DHCP and manual IP assignment, but nothing will coax the machine into life. I know the wall jack's not down, because hekyll works just fine with it. No one around here has an install disk, so I'll have to wait on that. Until then, I'm half-disconnected from the network. I am also extraordinarily displeased.

Is this a failure on my part? It can't be Phil fucking with me; no one's around today. I should know what's going on; it should already be fixed. I hate it when things fall apart; I hate it when I can't push back entropy.
