January 23rd, 2003

certification. [Jan. 23rd, 2003|11:33 pm]
Ah, my first day of actual classes. From what I can tell, I seem to have managed no classes on Mondays or Fridays, and just the Physics lab on Wednesdays. Everything, then, is bunched together on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

First, "Women and Violence", which I'll probably refer to as "Women's Studies". I'd had the instructor before; I remembered my halcyon days of debating through class and doing very little work that actually felt like work, and signed up. I hope to discover why people think the "men can stop rape; why don't they?" pin is considered inoffensive, and possibly talk at great lengths about porn.

"Programming Language Translation", better known as "Compilers", was next. My instructor is a strange-looking man, with a deep European accent and stringy black hair that reminds me of the later Bond villains. He's a pretty interesting lecturer, and I'm practically vibrating with excitement over learning to use real live Unix-style toolchains. lex and yacc, here I come! (flex and bison, technically.)

Last, I almost fell asleep in the middle of "Numerical Methods for Scientific Computation". I tend not to do well with long-titled courses, and this one, taught by a nebbishy semi-retired professor, was no different. We reviewed some basic calculus, and I almost started snoring. Not good for the first day.

Then, the final teachback. I nailed it. Geary had the class give me a round of applause, and I know it was meaningful 'cause he didn't give it to anyone else. Sure, it was more for relative improvement than absolute quality, but I made it. I'm certified, and this means that I can conceivably make seriously fat wads of cash this semester.

Oh, look. The math department paid me. They paid me a hundred and eighty bucks less than they should have, but I can nearly pay off the bursar now. Joy; now I can pay other people. Can you feel the love?

Oh, and that parking ticket that Lee said she'd take care of---it seems to have followed me here. I'm not amused.
